June 26th is the U.N. International Day in support of the survivors & victims of torture
The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) is asking that organizations, schools, and congregations host events during the month of June to heighten public awareness on the issue of U.S. involvement in torture and to call for an end to torture around the world.
What Can Persons Do?
- Postcard campaign to secure congressional legislation ensuring access by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to all persons in detention in U.S. custody. Currently, this is required by an Executive Order issued by President Obama, but we need to codify this in law so that it is binding on future administrations. NRCAT has the post card format all set and ready for you to print. They also have instructions on how you can easily order postcards through FedEX. Ordering postcards will cost less than $20 for 200. Go to www.nrcat.org. Click on “June is Torture Awareness Month.” On the next page, click on “International Committee of the Red Cross.”
- Show the DVD — Ending U.S. Sponsored Torture Forever: A Study for People of Faith. This is a 20 minute video that does an excellent job of explaining why persons of faith believe torture to be wrong in all circumstances. The DVD, along with a study guide, is available on the NRCAT site. You’ll see the box for information on the home page.
In addition, we encourage you to read “Zubaydah’s Torture, Detention Subject of Senate Intelligence Inquiry,” which details new findings about US torture experiments.
