Jesuit Middle Schools

Several Jesuit high schools have earlier grades as part of their educational program. Loyola Blakefield (Towson, MD) has a middle school consisting of grades 6 through 8 and McQuaid Jesuit (Rochester, NY) has a middle school division for 7th and 8th graders. The academies at St. John’s Jesuit High School (Toledo, OH) and University of Detroit Jesuit High School (Detroit, MI) accept students into the 7th and 8th grades. Jesuit High School (New Orleans, LA) has an 8th grade program. Red Cloud Indian School, on the Pine Ridge Reservation, has a co-ed middle school for grades 5 through 8. In the fall of 2007, Boston College High School opened its Arrupe Division for grades 7 and 8, with a total initial enrollment of 220 young men.

In addition there are 13 Jesuit sponsored Nativity middle schools plus one that is cosponsored by the California Province, the Diocese of San Jose and the local parish. The Nativity model of middle school education has its roots in Nativity Mission Center which was started by the New York Province Jesuits in 1948 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In 1971 the Center expanded its after-school program to include a year-round middle school for neighborhood children. Typically Nativity middle schools serve students from low-income families in urban communities by providing rigorous academic programs and individualized support systems to facilitate their graduates’ enrollment and success in college preparatory schools. In July 2006, Jesuit sponsored Nativity middle schools became members of the newly formed NativityMiguel Network of Schools.

This national NativityMiguel Network of School enhances the viability and vitality of the schools to deliver a uniquely effective, faith-based education to the students in their care. Member schools are identified by and committed to nine Mission Effectiveness Standards that have been the source of growth and the basis for replication within the Network. The Jesuit sponsored schools and 64 other member schools are in 27 states serving over 4,300 students, 89% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch. Nearly ninety percent (90%) of the graduates go on to complete their high school education, and 75% of these attend either two or four-year colleges and universities.
