Loyola Press to Publish Pope Francis’ First Book

March 19, 2014 — The Chicago-based Jesuit publisher Loyola Press beat out some of the nation’s top publishers for the rights to publish Pope Francis’ first book in the United States and Canada.

“The Church of Mercy: My Vision for the Church,” a book of essays, speeches and homilies written by Pope Francis since his election on March 13, 2013, will be published on Easter Sunday, April 20.

“Pope Francis is arguably the most fascinating person on the planet,” said Joe Durepos, executive editor of trade acquisitions at Loyola Press. “For us as a small, Jesuit-owned publishing company to publish a book by Pope Francis in the English-language market was a no-brainer.”

Durepos said the press was determined to secure the book rights after seeing excerpts. "We saw it as a message of hope and renewal, wholly consistent with our mission at Loyola Press," he said.

According to Durepos, “The Church of Mercy” is a handbook for a 21st century global church. “Everything you’ve seen that has made headlines or sound bites or been attention-getting, it’s in this little book,” he said.

Loyola Press is adapting the English-language translation from the Italian for the North American market. “The Church of Mercy” will be released in print and e-book simultaneously and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com. [Sources: Publishers Weekly, Chicago Tribune]
