Spring Hill College Names New Jesuit President

November 7, 2013 — Starting next month, Jesuit Father Gregory Lucey will once again assume the presidency of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. Fr. Lucey served as Spring Hill's president from 1997 to 2009; he succeeds Jesuit Father Richard P. Salmi, who has served as the college’s 38th president since June 2009.

After leaving Spring Hill College in 2009, Fr. Lucey served as president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and then returned to Spring Hill College as chancellor in spring 2013. His role as chancellor included strengthening the college’s mission and identity as a Jesuit and Catholic college.

Fr. Lucey has also previously served as president of the Jesuit Conference of the United States, rector of the Jesuit Community at Marquette University in Milwaukee and vice president for development at Seattle University.

A native of Wisconsin, Fr. Lucey entered the Society of Jesus in 1951 and was ordained a priest in 1964. He holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, a master’s degree in liturgy from the University of Notre Dame, as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees in philosophy, theology and education from Saint Louis University. He has served as a trustee of Xavier University, Loyola University New Orleans and Marquette University.

“Spring Hill College is tremendously fortunate to call upon the leadership and experience of Fr. Lucey,” said Jim McKinney, chair of the Spring Hill College Board of Trustees. “He served as one of the longest tenured presidents in the college’s history and is credited with the sweeping renovations to the campus. ... He is also a nationally recognized leader in Jesuit higher education and has cultivated a vast network of important relationships both in Mobile and nationwide.” [Spring Hill College, AJCU]
