August 23, 2013 — In July 2013, three million Catholic pilgrims gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,  to celebrate World Youth Day with Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope.  Young people from all over the world attended the five-day event — celebrated every three years in a different country, beginning with Pope John Paul II in the 1980s — to learn about their faith and experience the global Catholic Church.

Prior to World Youth Day, 2,000 pilgrims from Jesuit-affiliated institutions around the world also participated in MAGIS, a pastoral experience of Ignatian programs and events held in locations across Brazil. Organized by the Society of Jesus and other institutions, the MAGIS initiative derives its name from the Latin phrase meaning “the more.” St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, encouraged those who follow Christ to examine their ability to do more for him and, in turn, for others. "MAGIS" is an expression of an aspiration of St. Ignatius and a tenet of Ignatian spirituality.

The Jesuit Conference has made available all media surrounding this year's event at Jesuit.org/WYD.
