Sacred Heart Mission (Polish Jesuits)

Chicago, Illinois

Sacred Heart Mission Parish serves as the center of Polish worship and culture in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago. In 1934, Polish Jesuits arrived in the city to establish a successful mission to serve Catholic Polish immigrants. Sacred Heart Mission on the city's northwest side provides all Masses in Polish to best meet the needs of its community.

For many years, Sacred Heart’s small chapel served the faithful Polish community, but over time, it was no longer able to accommodate the increasing number of Poles in the Chicago area. In 2001, the Jesuit Millennium Center (JOM) was opened, with the main area of the center dedicated to the place of worship, the Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. JOM serves 4,500 people each weekend for Mass.

The center is also the site of many cultural and educational events for the Polish community. It houses a library, photography and computer courses and an auditorium for concert performances.
