Jesuit Named Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

Pope Benedict XVI has named Father Luis Ladaria, S.J., of the Aragon Province, Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith with the rank of Archbishop. The Episcopal ordination will take place in Rome on July 26.

Father Luis Ladaria was born in Manacor, Balearic Islands on April 19, 1944. He joined the Society of Jesus on October 17, 1966 and was ordained to the priesthood on July 29, 1973.

After graduation in law by the University of Madrid (1961-1966), he studied philosophy at Comillas University (Madrid 1967-69), and theology at Sankt Georgen (Frankfurt 1968-73). At the Gregorian University he obtained a doctorate in theology with his dissertation on “The Holy Spirit in Saint Hilary of  Poitiers”.

After serving as Professor of History of Dogma at Comillas University, he was appointed Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Gregorian in 1984. From 1986 to 1892 he was Vice Rector of the Gregorian. On March 3, 2004, John Paul II appointed him General Secretary of the International Commission of Theology.

His bibliography comprises 20 books and 83 articles. He is currenty preparing “El Dios vivo y verdadero: el Misterio de la Trinidad.”

On the occasion of the pontifical appointment of Father Ladaria, Father General has sent the following message to all the Provinces of the Society:

At the moment of assuming the important mission entrusted to him by the Holy Father, we accompany Father Ladaria with our prayers and our support.  We hope and pray that he may help to build ways of dialogue in the service of the Faith.

On the part of the Society I am confident that once again the generosity of the Provinces will provide Theology professors of competence and spiritual quality to continue the work of Father Ladaria at the Gregorian University.
