DREAM Act possible rider on Defense bill

Tens of thousands of immigrant youth may have the opportunity to remain in the United States if the DREAM Act amendment offered by Senators Durbin (D-IL), Hagel (R-NE), and Lugar (R-IN) is accepted as part of the Department of Defense authorization bill being debated by the Senate this week. The amendment, H.R. 1585, would require 60 votes to pass.

The DREAM act would provide a six-year path to legal status for undocumented high schools graduates who continue on to college or serve in the military.  The path to legalization would apply only to individuals brought to the U.S. at least 5 years ago as children, who have grown up here, and who have remained in school and out of trouble.

The Jesuit Conference asks you to urge your Senators to support the DREAM Act.  An additional 65,000 students are eligible for DREAM Act this year; let us support them as they seek to contribute to our nation and achieve the American Dream.
