GC35 In Their Own Words

Reflections on the Election -- Tom Regan, SJ

posted by: Admin on Tuesday, January 22, 2008

This past weekend all of the Jesuits at the Congregation were privileged to witness a very genuine movement of the Holy Spirit. After four days of intense prayer during the murmuratio there seemed to be an amazing convergence when the electors gathered in the Aula.

As the 29th successor to St. Ignatius, the Congregation named Father Adolfo Nicolás to lead the Society. He is a very holy and devout individual who inspires great confidence. As the secretary of the 34th General Congregation, many remember the way in which he organized and conducted the sessions. Those of us interacted with him at the conference of provincials in Loyola in 2005 were thoroughly impressed by his clear and confident interventions. The Jesuits from East Asia have been very edified by the manner in which he has brought unity to their conference. This was clearly no easy task considering the number of countries, cultures and languages that are involved.

Our new Father General has a very comprehensive view of the modern world, growing our of his own extensive experiences. Most of all, he is clearly a man of deep prayer. Please join me in praying that the Lord may bless him and the Society of Jesus abundantly in the days and weeks ahead as the General Congregations continues to meet.
