In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the New York Province of the Society of Jesus has set up a fund to assist members of local Jesuit schools directly affected by the storm.
The New York Province is accepting monetary donations to help families of students, faculty and staff at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., and Xavier High School in New York City. Approximately 100 students and families require temporary short-term housing, and a significant number of them will need long-term housing support as their homes were destroyed by flood waters or fire.
The Jesuits’ Mount Manresa Retreat Center in Staten Island has been sheltering some high school families and staff, and some rooms have been made available as a site for FEMA to provide housing and services to families and relief workers.
Funds sent to the New York Province will help students, staff and families secure housing, assist with tuition expenses and help families who may have special needs. Please visit the New York Province website to make an online donation.
In addition, St. Peter’s Prep has set up a Sandy Recovery Fund to help cover the cost of repairs to its campus. After insurance and other emergency funding, a full recovery is projected to cost up to an additional $1.5 million.
Three Jesuit universities were also affected by Hurricane Sandy: Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn.; Fordham University, with campuses in the Bronx and Manhattan, N.Y.; and Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, N.J.
