McCourt, Gerald P.
DiedFr. Gerald P. McCourt, SJ, died Monday, July 9, 2012, at El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos, California, after a long illness. He was 71 years old. Born in San Francisco, California, on October 25, 1940, Fr. McCourt entered the Society of Jesus at Sacred Heart Novitiate in Los Gatos on August 14, 1959. He pronounced final vows on November 23, 1980, at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, California.
He was a Jesuit for 53 years and had recently celebrated his 40th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood.
Fr. McCourt’s ministry was spent in high school, parish, retreat, and administrative ministries. He taught Classics and theology at Jesuit High School (1973-81), Brophy College Prep, Phoenix (1981-87), and Bellarmine College Prep, San Jose (1987-88). He served as pastor of Holy Family Church, San Jose (1988-93), and as retreat director at the Jesuit Retreat Center, Los Altos (1993-2004). His final years of ministry were as senior priest, St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, Sacramento.
