National Jesuit News Takes Top Prize at Catholic Press Awards
On June 22 in Indianapolis, Ind., the Catholic Press Association held its annual awards ceremony honoring the best in contemporary Catholic media. Joining the ranks of those celebrated for providing high quality, informative stories, National Jesuit News received First Place for Best Electronic Newsletter.
The online news site also received two honorable mentions. For its coverage of Magis and World Youth Day 2011, National Jesuit News received an award for Best Online Content Not Published in Print. An honorable mention for Best Freestanding Online/Multimedia Presentation of Video for its “Path to Priesthood” video series rounded out the three awards received by National Jesuit News.
With a judging panel of esteemed journalism professors and staff from the Catholic University of America; Spring Hill College of Mobile, Ala.; and Marquette University of Milwaukee, Wisc., as well as hands-on communications professionals, the Catholic Press Association singled out National Jesuit News’ enewsletter for its “well written stories [that are] current, insightful and informative.”
Other Jesuit-affiliated publications receiving honors from the Catholic Press Association included: America magazine’s “In All Things” blog with First Place honors for Best Online Blog; a First Place award for Best Magazine or Newsletter Website for America; a First Place award for Best Review Section for America as well as Second Place honors for General Excellence – National General Interest, Best Editorial and Best Review and an honorable mention for Best Feature Article – General Interest Magazines; two Second Place awards for Best Feature Article – Religious Order Magazine for the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus’ magazine Jesuit Journeys, along with a Second Place award for General Excellence – Religious Order Magazines and an honorable mention for Best Essay – Religious Order Magazine. Jesuit Father James Martin won First Place for the Book Awards section in the Spirituality – Hardcover category for his recently published book, Between Heaven and Mirth.
