Nativity School of Worcester has been named the 2012 recipient of the New England Regional Assembly Recognition Award by The College Board. This award recognizes a program that has shown outstanding commitment to students and the field of education by enabling underrepresented students with academic and leadership potential to attend college.
Specifically highlighted in the nomination for the award was Nativity’s Graduate Support Program that works with graduates following their 8th grade graduation. One hundred percent of Nativity’s 76 graduates were accepted into and received sufficient financial aid to attend private high school. Ninety-four percent are on track to graduate from high school in four years. Graduates from the school’s first class are currently enrolled at 11 different colleges and universities across the country.
“We are committed to the success of our students, not only in middle school, but throughout high school and college as well,” said Nativity School President Alex Zequeira. “At the Nativity School of Worcester, we make a 12-year commitment to the boys we enroll in 5th grade. We are there to provide the critical guidance, tutoring, and financial support necessary for our students to succeed, not only in middle school, but in high school and college as well. It is a tremendous honor for us to receive an award from a national organization that recognizes what happens here in Worcester every day.”
The College Board, a not-for-profit membership organization, is committed to excellence and equity in education. It promotes excellence and equity in education through programs for K–12 and higher education institutions, and provides students a path to college opportunities, including financial support and scholarships. The College Board also serves the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators, schools and colleges.
“Nativity School of Worcester does an outstanding job educating, supporting, and advocating for their underserved students from middle school through college,” said College Board Vice President for the Middle States Region, Robert Alig. “The individual success stories that they have helped create are a testament to Nativity’s efforts and to its mission.”
