Ignatian Teach-In on Environmental Justice and Sustainability

ISN invites the Ignatian family to attend a three-day learning experience exploring environmental justice and sustainability. This interest follows a growing national trend of Jesuit universities, high schools, parishes, and ministries who are looking at their ecological footprints and making strides to create more environmentally sustainable campuses and communities.

Invited Speakers
• Dan Misleh, Executive Director of the Catholic Coalition for Climate Change
• Maria Gunnoe, Winner of the Goldman Prize, Director of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition
• Jessy Tolkan, Executive Director of the Energy Action Coalition

Focus of the Teach-In:

• The moral implications of climate change, and who is most impacted
• How can students, parishioners and individuals become more engaged in environmental justice and sustainability and how we can share this information with each other
• Best practices for creating a sustainable environment

Tentative Schedule

Friday March 5th 6:00pm-9:00pm (includes dinner)
Saturday March 6th 9:00am-4:00pm, followed by dinner and small group discussions
Sunday March 7th 9:00am-4:00pm (includes Action Day and liturgy)

Please call 304-232-0300 and ask for the Ignatian Solidarity Network block room rate of $79 for a double and $89 for a king.

Action Day
The Teach-In will include a day of action, which seeks to provide a hands on environmental experience in the Wheeling community, as well as provide the necessary skills to carry on this work in your home communities long after the Teach-In has ended.

Potential actions include:
• Learning and conducting an energy audit of a school, parish and/or house
• Visiting a nearby sustainable community
• Working on a rails to trails project in the Wheeling community

Optional Environmental Excursions: March 8th, 2010
To further learning after the Teach-In, delegations may consider day trips to nearby communities such as: visiting a mountaintop removal site, exploring the Ohio River and learning how to test water quality, and/or learning more about Pittsburgh’s Green Building Association. Participants will be responsible for organizing the trips and the expenses associated with them.
